Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital as a Head of Nursing Education and Workforce. This is a new leadership role for the Trust and the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting RNOH to be a learning organisation and to have a nursing workforce that meets the needs of patients and service users, in line with Trust strategy.

RNOH carries out crucial work in treating and supporting patients with some of the most complex and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, as well as our vital research and development into future treatments and assistive technologies. The Head of Nursing Education and Workforce will play a key role in helping us build on the long history of excellence at the RNOH, ensuring our nursing teams have the capacity, motivation and support to be at the forefront of expert practice, nursing research and quality improvement and to provide outstanding care.

To be successful in this role you will be a dynamic and experienced nurse leader with a clear vision for excellence. You will have the ability to engage meaningfully with key stakeholders and be well networked.

The Head of Nursing Education and Workforce will lead on the learning, recruitment and retention agenda for Nursing. They will be an integral part of the corporate senior nursing team. This role is pivotal in role in supporting RNOH to be a learning organisation and to have a nursing workforce that meets the needs of patients and service users, in line with Trust strategy. It will provide leadership to implement and monitor key programmes of work specific to the nursing workforce and support the delivery of strategic objectives.

The Head of Nursing Education and Workforce will provide strategic leadership for the Trust’s nursing workforce strategy, the management and expansion of pre-registration nursing placements as well as the development of a post graduate learning portfolio within RNOH supporting the identification of career pathways for all members of the nursing team while fostering a ‘grow your own approach.’

The Head of Nursing Education and Workforce will take a lead in developing and shaping the role and input of the clinical educators in the delivery of nursing education and clinical capabilities across the Trust.

The Head of Nursing Education and Workforce will lead the nursing education and workforce team and work in partnership with the integrated care system. They will represent the organisation across the integrated care system and Pan London on the Nursing Education and Workforce agenda.

This role reports to the Deputy Chief Nurse would suit a candidate who aspires to develop and build on their strategic leadership skills.

Main job responsibilities are to:
1. Be the professional lead for nurse education providing advice on all matters pertaining to nursing education and workforce.
1. Foster a culture which promotes a spirit of enquiry, innovation and quality improvement in order to shape the future direction of education and workforce development within the Trust.
2. Engage with key stakeholders to develop and implement the strategy for nursing education at RNOH from entry level health care assistant roles through to senior leadership roles.
3. Maximise opportunity to create an internal market for education delivery, ensuring the expertise within the organisation is utilised.
4. Work in partnership with leaders from nursing, AHP, pharmacy, clinical science and learning and organisational development within the organisation, to develop and deliver a quality assured educational offer.
5. Lead on the development of career pathways for the nursing workforce at RNOH.
6. Develop an internal quality assurance process to ensure the delivery of high quality education that is inclusive and reflective of the service need.
7. Provide strategic leadership for the implementation of national, regional and organisational education and workforce development work streams and initiatives.
8. In partnership with HR colleagues, lead on the organisation’s nursing recruitment and retention strategy.
9. Ensure programmes of education and pastoral support are delivered to support the integration of both domestic and internationally recruited nurses into the nursing workforce.
10. Ensure robust quality monitoring of RNOH learning environments to meet the requirements of the NMC are in place.
11. Promote an environment which is conducive to learning, education, training, research and development, fostering innovative practice and proactively implementing changes to address knowledge and skills gaps.
12. Provide senior leadership to ensure workforce and safe staffing data are collected and reported in accordance with Trust and NHSE/I requirements.
13. Support nursing leaders across the organisation to develop business cases that have implications on nursing
workforce establishments.
14. Utilise a broad range of service improvement methodologies to maximise the opportunity to support workforce transformation and support quality improvement and service transformation initiatives.
15. Deputise for the Chief Nurse/ Deputy Chief Nurse as delegated.
