We are seeking postdoctoral scientists to join an EPSRC funded project that will use state of the art additive manufacturing / 3D printing systems available at the University of Nottingham for the production of translation ready medical devices.

Recently we have shown that certain polymers developed in our labs are effective at reducing infections and controlling host response in the clinic. We propose to combine this with recent discoveries regarding how micro topographies provide an improvement in the host immune response and integrate our findings into devices that are better able to promote integration and wound healing.

This work will use combinatorial material and topography libraries within “ChemoTopo Chips” manufactured with 3D printing technologies that are able to create structures at the micro or nano scale, including projection micro stereolithography and two photon polymerisation. The results of our high throughput analyses will be used within computational and AI models to extract the important structure function relationships and allow us to predict efficacy. Candidate structures and materials will then be taken from in vitro to in vivo as we seek the most clinically relevant surfaces.

This post holder will be responsible for the development of the additive manufacturing strategies used within both the high throughput testing and the device production. They will work closely with polymer chemists leading the identification of new materials, and our analytical teams to produce and then analyse the most useful biologically relevant data. The post holder will also work closely with our industrial partners.

Candidates must have a PhD (or be about to obtain) in a relevant subject area.

This post will be hosted in the Faculty of Engineering, but based in the Nottingham Biodiscovery Institute, where the Additive Biofabrication laboratory was opened in 2022. This post will be offered on a fixed term contract in the first instance for 2 years. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours per week). Job share arrangements may be considered.

We pride ourselves on the collegial and supportive culture created by our staff. We are dedicated to creating an environment which enables both our staff to thrive and achieve their potential. Our commitment to Equality and Diversity has been recognised in the awarding of an Athena SWAN Silver Award.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Ricky Wildman (email: ricky.wildman@nottingham.ac.uk) or Derek Irvine (email: derek.irvine@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
