Background

The School of Arts is one of ten schools at the university and offers undergraduate and postgraduate provision across a wide range of arts disciplines and subjects. It has a energetic and ambitious approach to making regional, national and international connections in both academic and professional industry contexts.

The School itself is organised into two academic departments. The Department of Art & Design Communication comprises undergraduate courses in Game Art, Illustration, Fine Art, Fine Art with Psychology, Graphic Design, Graphic Design, Advertising and Marketing plus taught postgraduate provision in Creative Media. There is also BA Musical Theatre, which sits within the department but is located and delivered through Millennium Performing Arts in central London.

Central to the work across the School is active engagement with the Creative Industries and the Department of Art & Design Communication takes a highly proactive approach to engaging with the professional world and to creating opportunities for current students and alumni. It has strong links with a range of professional arts organizations and the wider creative and cultural industries and is home to the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society.

There has been significant continued investment in facilities for the Arts and the teaching and student experience is Studio based and has benefitted from these developments including Animation and Game Art studios, Drama studios, Digital Arts Centre, Film Studio and the iconic Art House Studios, which opened in 2019 and in addition to being a teaching space also stages events and exhibitions.
