Key Responsibilities include: Working in conjunction with the Board to develop and embed the organisation vision and strategy, building a culture of respect that values diversity and maintains stakeholder engagement. Ensuring robust governance and assurance arrangements are in place and building effective systems for financial control, risk management and an effective investigatory methodology. Ensure the organisation conducts independent and effective investigations into patient safety concerns in healthcare that provide value for money, bring change to the system and reduce risk. Maintaining corporate responsibility for the decisions and performance of the organisation.
Building local investigation capacity so more issues are investigated effectively at a local level. Providing insight, analysis, and training to support system partners on system-wide learning and improvement. Supporting the Board in establishing the HSSIB as a credible organisation with patients, clinicians, government, arms length bodies, and the wider healthcare system. Key Accountabilities To lead on a national investigation function in healthcare that will improve safety in healthcare by conducting independent investigations and produce conclusions and recommendations that reduce risk.
To lead a team of expert investigators and investigation educators, ensuring that the right knowledge, skills and development are in place to conduct effective safety investigations across health services. To oversee all investigations and conduct or assist with investigations as appropriate. To improve the approach to investigations taking into account experience, feedback, evaluation and learning. To ensure that the investigations carried out are of the highest standard and are an exemplar to others conducting local investigations.
To ensure resources are utilised efficiently and effectively within the allocated budget. To manage and report on the performance of the HSSIBs investigatory and education functions against key objectives and strategic outcomes. To build collaborative relationships with health service providers and other stakeholders ensuring that the HSSIB is independent and influential and that its recommendations are effectively implemented. To provide periodic reports on process, practice, and outputs of the HSSIB to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and to Parliamentary Select Committees.
Hold staff accountable for performance and build a high performing open culture, confronting where necessary issues of behaviour, delivery and standards. Able to act as a role model for inclusive behaviours, creating a collaborative, supportive and inclusive working environment where diversity and equality are respected and valued.
